answers “how to write a resume”

The Professional Writing Toolkit

A document-writing system: one structure per document type, plus fill-in drafts for cover letters, resumes, resignation letters, recommendations and email.

Give any document a structure and a deadline, then fill the blanks instead of facing a cursor.

This is you, in 5 lines

No invented pain points — these are the sentences the bundle was written against, taken from how people phrase the problem. Built for beginners.

You open a blank document, write three sentences, delete them and open a new tab.

Your resume carries seven bullets for one job and not one of them starts with a result.

The letter covers everything you have ever done instead of the one thing this reader needs.

You have rewritten the email four times and it still ends with 'please let me know if you have any questions'.

The deadline is tonight, so the 11pm draft goes out without a read-through.

what changes after

You pick the structure, drop your facts into the blanks and cut the draft to length in one pass — the cover letter, the resignation note or the proposal goes out the same evening, with a saved master file you will reuse next time.

Why this keeps getting asked

Reddit is not included: its anonymous API returns 403 from this machine. These are other people's public questions — proof the problem is asked a lot, not proof this product works. Read them yourself.

Each title links to the original thread in a new tab. The titles are quoted exactly, so if a site is unreachable from your network you can still find the thread by searching it.

Four chapters, each ending in a page

Every chapter ends in something you keep and use — not a summary, an artifact.

01

Pick the structure before you write a word

Every document that works has the same skeleton: a reader, a decision, an order. Choose the structure first and the writing becomes filling, not inventing.

01Name the reader and their decision: who opens this, and what should they do after reading — hire, approve, accept, release.
02Choose one order from the Structure Map: letters run reason to evidence to ask; proposals run problem to plan to cost to next step.
03Write your one-sentence purpose at the top of the draft and delete it before sending — it keeps every paragraph on track.
04List the three facts that must survive the edit — a date, a number, a name — and put them in a notes column before drafting.
05Set the length cap: one page for letters and cover letters, two for proposals, three to five bullets per resume role.
you finish with: Structure Map + purpose line
02

Fill the draft from the inside out

A blank page is where drafts die. Open the matching fill-in template and write into blanks that already hold the shape of a finished document.

01Open the template that matches the document — cover letter, recommendation, resignation, email — and write into the blanks, never onto a blank page.
02Lead with the specific: name the role, the number, the deadline or the outcome in the first two sentences.
03Put evidence beside every claim — one number, one example or one name — and cut any sentence you cannot back.
04Keep one idea per paragraph and keep paragraphs under three lines on the reader's screen.
05State the ask explicitly: what you want and the date you need it by, in one sentence at the end.
you finish with: First draft built from the fill-in template
03

Cut it to the length that gets read

Readers give the first paragraph thirty seconds. This pass is what turns a full draft into the version that respects that window.

01Read the whole thing aloud and mark every sentence you stumble on, rush or skip.
02Delete the throat-clearing opener — 'I am writing to inform you' — and start at the point.
03Merge duplicated ideas; most second drafts are the same point said twice in different words.
04Run one fact-check pass: dates, job titles, amounts, name spellings and the exact title from the posting.
05Format for the channel: PDF for applications, plain text for email, one column, no colored sidebars.
you finish with: Final draft + fact-check marks
04

Send it, save it, reuse it

The document is only finished when it is out and the next one starts easier. A named master file and a sent-date turn one good draft into a system.

01Save the master as role-company-document-date so the next document starts from a real file, not from memory.
02Send from a device where you can catch the reply, and log the send date in your applications tracker.
03Write the follow-up in the same structure before you send — one week later, three sentences, one ask.
04Note the line that worked — the opener, the subject phrase, the structure — so the next document starts further ahead.
you finish with: Saved master file + follow-up row

Mistakes the method prevents

Each one appears in the guide with the fix beside it.

Starting on a blank page

Inventing structure mid-draft makes the letter wander and buries the ask somewhere after the second paragraph.

→ Pick the structure first and write into the matching fill-in draft.

Telling your whole story

The reader gives the first thirty seconds to a biography that never reaches the point they hired for.

→ One purpose, three facts, evidence beside each claim — cut everything else.

Leaving the ask implicit

'Let me know if you have any questions' hands the reader nothing to do, so nothing happens.

→ End with what you want and the date you need it by, in one sentence.

Sending the 11pm draft

A wrong date or a doubled word in the first line decides how the rest of the document gets read.

→ One read-aloud pass plus a fact check of dates, titles and amounts before you send.

  • Reader and decision named: who opens it and what they should do next
  • Purpose written in one sentence at the top of the draft
  • Structure chosen from the map and followed in order
  • Three must-survive facts present and placed in the first half
  • First two sentences name the role, number or deadline specifically
  • Every claim backed by a number, an example or a name
  • One idea per paragraph and paragraphs under three lines
  • Ask stated at the end with the date it is needed by
  • Length cap met: one page, two pages, or three to five bullets per role
  • Job title, company name and dates copied exactly from the posting
  • Name and company spellings checked against their own website
  • Subject line written for any email, under eight words

The five templates, in plain language

Two are spreadsheets that add themselves up; three are printable pages.

  • Structure Map — the working order for letters, cover letters, proposals, statements and emails, on one page you fill in.
  • Cover Letter Draft — reason, evidence, ask, with blanks for the role, two proof points and the closing request.
  • Resume Bullet Builder — a spreadsheet that forces an action verb, a task, a number and a result on every line (`.csv`).
  • Resignation & Recommendation Letters — two drafts written around dates, duties, a clean handoff and correct names.

Questions, answered plainly

What exactly do I get?

A printable guide, a fill-in workbook, a one-page cheat sheet and five templates — four fill-in pages and one spreadsheet (`.csv`) that opens in Google Sheets or Excel.

Will it sound like a template?

The blanks hold your facts, your numbers and your names; the structure holds the order. What you get is a document that reads as planned rather than as padded.

Does it cover proposals and personal statements too?

Yes — through the Structure Map in the guide and workbook, which gives the order for proposals, statements and essays. The five files are the fill-in drafts for cover letters, resume bullets, resignation letters, recommendations and email.

Do I need Word or any special software?

No. The pages are plain text you paste into Word, Google Docs or an application text box, and the spreadsheet opens anywhere.

How do I get it after paying?

The store emails the download link as soon as payment clears. It is a set of files, not a course, so there is nothing to wait for.

The honest bit

Read this before you buy. It matters more than any headline above.

What it isA file bundle: 3 PDFs and 5 templates. No login, no subscription, no course platform, no upsell inside.
What it is notNot a writing service — nobody drafts these for you — and not a substitute for checking the facts you put in them.
No manufactured urgencyNo countdowns, strike-through prices, review stars or buyer counts appear on this page. The price is the price.
Print it freelyPrint as many copies as you like for yourself or your household. The examples are generic and contain no personal data.
